Four miles northwest was the San Bernardino River, which was supplied with considerable water for irrigation. George Chaffey, a Canadian from Ontario, bought the land in the northwestern corner of his ranch in 1882 for $1,000 (about $2,500 today).

After the end of the Mexican-American War, California became part of the United States, and Chaffey settled in the Upland with other aspiring settlers.

In the 1950s, the LA highway system grew, diverting traffic from Route 66 (replaced by the 10 here in 1964) and I-10. This helped ease commuting between Upland and Los Angeles and helped make it a more commercial residential community.

In 1906, the process was decided by San Bernardino County, which also adopted the name Upland as its new city. The county countered with a measure that would revise the supervisor's salary scale to match that of the supervisor of the county, not the city.

Lake Cuyamaca is a scenic lake located in a remote area of the San Bernardino National Forest, south of Upland. Upland is directly on the Pacific Ocean, and there is a tornado risk, so note the tornado warning for San Bernardino County from the National Weather Service. From here you can reach the old Route 66 (which is called Foothill Blvd here), but you have to check in at the Uplands Intercontinental Hotel, which is just a few blocks from the beach.
